Adding a butterfly garden to your backyard or patio is a great way to beautify your space and bring nature to your back door. Butterfly gardens are easy to create and the variety of butterflies you attract may astound you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Section of land with good soil
  • Containers for planting
  • Potting soil
  • Butterfly attracting plants
  1. Step 1

Do some research. Depending on where you live, different plants will be used. You will need both nectar plants and herbs such as fennel or dill. Find plants that are native to your area for the best results. Local gardening centers are your best source of information.

  2. Step 2

Decide where you want your garden. Do you have a large enough area to plant approximately five good-sized plants? If so, begin preparing the soil. Or will you use containers and create a beautiful container garden for a patio or back porch?

  3. Step 3

Buy some organic fertilizer. Butterflies are more likely to be attracted to plants that are free of chemicals.

  4. Step 4

Have some water nearby. If you have a garden fountain or bird bath, place your butterfly garden near it. If you have natural, fresh water close by, even better.

  5. Step 5

Be sure to water your newly planted butterfly attractors every day as new plants need extra care.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you are shopping for your plants, ask for a plant with a caterpillar or butterfly eggs on it. Watch as your caterpillar turns into a butterfly.
