Step 1
Set up the step apparatus on a firm, non-slip surface.

Step 2
Approach the apparatus from the side. In other words, you normally approach the step aerobics platform so that it appears to you from the long end. You now want to approach it from the short end, or tip of the platform.

Step 3
Straddle the apparatus with your feet. Hence the term "astride approach." This refers to your feet being "astride" the step aerobics platform.

Step 4
Begin step aerobics motions up onto the apparatus, starting from the astride approach position and returning to it at the end of each stepping motion.

Step 5
Utilize 4-count steps. Step up with Foot A (1 count), up with the Foot B (1 count), down with Foot A (1 count), and then down with Foot B (1 count).
