Avocados are an extremely nutritious fruit, yet many people hesitate to purchase them because they don't know what to look for at the market or grocery store. If you love guacamole, learn how to choose the best avocados available and when to pass them over for another fruit choice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Inspect the avocados for any bruises cuts and blemishes and pass on these. A bruise on the outside will be a dark spot on the inside and while you can remove the bad area, you will not be getting the most for your money.

  2. Step 2

Check for ripeness by feeling the weight and firmness of the fruit. A ripe avocado will fell heavy for its size, and will be firm to the touch yet give a bit if you push on it, then come back to its original shape.

  3. Step 3

Look at the area under the little stem; it should be green rather than black or brown. If it's not green, keep checking for the perfect fruit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avocados ripen nicely at home after a day or two on the counter top and unripened fruit ensures you of finding fruit that is unblemished.
  • Ripe avocados can be mashed with a bit of lemon juice and frozen for future use.
  • Avocados will turn brown when exposed to air, so cover the guacamole with plastic wrap as soon as you prepare it.
  • Avocados are a fickle fruit, and occasionally you will choose the perfect one only to find when you cut it open that it's brown throughout. It's not you're fault, it's the fruit's fault.
