How to Ollie Stairs

While it is difficult to track the exact year that skateboarding came around, there are articles in the New York Times dating to 1893 speaking of kids dangerously riding down ramps on four wheeled carts. The ollie was created in the late 1970s, and has made many impressive skateboarding tricks possible. You can take your skateboarding to the next level by learning to ollie down stairs.

  • 1 Skateboard
  • Curb to ollie off of
  • Stairs

  1. Step 1

    Invest in a good skateboard. Anyone who tells you that a skateboard is just a skateboard is wrong. Different wheels, trucks, and boards can all effect potential tricks.

  2. Step 2

    Learn how to ride your skateboard first. If you are not completely comfortable riding on your skateboard without doing tricks, then any tricks can be harmful.

  3. Step 3

    Learn how to do a normal ollie. The ollie is one of the most basic skateboarding tricks a person can learn, and is vital to doing many other great skateboard tricks. People ollie in different ways. One way to learn is by placing your back foot near the very end of your skateboard. Place your toes firmly on the back of the skateboard, bringing your other foot about mid-board. Push down hard with your back foot while raising your front foot. Slide your front foot up the skateboard. With practice, this will help you accomplish an ollie.

  4. Step 4

    Try an ollie off of a small curb after learning to ollie on the ground. To do this, roll up to the curb at a speed you're comfortable with, and as your skateboard nears the edge, pop your ollie.

  5. Step 5

    Practice. Doing an ollie off of a raised surface is not the easiest feat in the world. Keep trying until you are comfortable doing the trick.

  6. Step 6

    Increase the height of what you are attempting your ollie from. Or go ahead and try two steps. Continue to progress as you get comfortable. Move on to three, four, five steps, and so on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are completely comfortable with doing an ollie on flat ground before attempting steps.
  • Keep practicing. Once you overcome your fear and can commit to the trick, it will make it much easier.
  • Always wear protective gear such as a helmet and pads.
  • Don't lean backwards during the trick. The board may fly from under you and send you flying.
  • When coming up to the stairs, if you feel scared and unable to commit, then bail. It is easier to recover from broken pride than a broken neck.
