Step 1
Give toddlers plenty of cool liquids. This will prevent dehydration by replenishing any fluids that your child may lose due to his fever. Caffeinated beverages such as sodas should be avoided, as they trigger urination and only increase the risk of dehydration.
-
Step 2
Dress your toddler in single layer clothing and cover him with a lightweight sheet. Overbundling a child can raise a her body temperature and cause her fever to increase.
-
Step 3
Give your toddler a lukewarm bath. This can help reduce your child’s temperature and make him less irritated.
-
Step 4
Allow a fan to blow directly on your toddler. The calm breeze of a fan can keep your child cool and make her more comfortable.
-
Step 5
Give your toddler an acetaminophen or ibuprofen fever reducer such as Children's Tylenol or Children's Motrin. Don't give your child aspirin, as it has been associated with a potentially fatal condition called Reye's Syndrome. Also, it's advisable to speak to your child's pediatrician before administering medications, as some fever reducers may not be suitable for young toddlers.
