How to Train a Dog to Roll Over

After learning "Sit" and "Stay," the next command in the traditional progression of dog tricks is "Roll over." Both owner and furry friend take great pride in showing this trick to any willing audience every chance they get. However, to show off how well your best friend can follow your command to roll over, you'll have to put some time into training him.

Instructions

    • 1

Stock up on dog treats. As with every other trick you train your dog to do, rewarding him with a dog biscuit upon his success is the ultimate motivator for continued success.

    • 2

Command your dog to lie down. After he does this, hold a treat in front of his face and after he is focused on it, quickly make a clockwise circle with the treat in the air while saying the words "Roll over!" Your dog may likely be so focused on the treat that he accidentally rolls over. If so, reward him with the treat.

    • 3

Repeat the process and continue to emphasize the words "Roll over!" Be very upbeat and encouraging after each successful completion of the trick to help your dog make the connection between his actions and your command.

    • 4

Practice the trick on a regular basis. Like every other trick you have taught your dog, the key is practice. Your persistence will pay off because it is the repetition that will cement the trick in your dog's mind, enabling him to perform at your command.

Tips & Warnings
