Things You'll Need:
- Orchid plant
- Orchid potting mix
- Container for growing
- Upright stakes or wires for support
- Liquid fertilizer
-
Step 1
Choose an orchid from a specialty store because the growing conditions are ideal. Carefully examine both the plant and the roots for blemishes. The plants should be in proportion with the container and have no visible signs of distress.
-
Step 2
Remove the orchid from the original container by holding the plant at the base and carefully tilting the container until the plant comes out. Remove any loose planting mix or dead leaves. This step can be done at a later time if the plant has not yet filled the container. Orchids grow rather slowly compared to other houseplants.
-
Step 3
Choose a new container that will accommodate the roots and allow 1 to 2 years growth. If the container is too large, the root system will not thrive due to stagnant potting medium.
-
Step 4
Place potting mix into the new container, filling it approximately two-thirds. Orchid potting mixes can vary greatly as long as there is structural support for the roots and has plenty of air pockets. Ideal mixes may contain chopped pine or fir bark, pebbles, and perlite or vermiculite. This mix allows for aeration of the roots and proper drainage.
-
Step 5
Plant the orchid in the potting mixture by gently opening up the roots and placing it on top of the mixture. The crown should be just below the rim of the pot. Place potting mixture around the roots, tapping the pot to settle the mixture. Pack the mix firmly to hold the plant in place.
-
Step 6
Stake the plant if necessary by using upright stakes or wires. When doing this step, be careful not to disturb the plant while trying to make the stake as unobtrusive as possible. Some Orchids are sturdy enough not to need extra support.
-
Step 7
Water the plant thoroughly. Be careful not to let the plant sit in water. Saturated roots can lead to bacteria and disease. Since the planting mixture is primarily composed of non-absorbing materials, the plant will need more frequent watering than other houseplants.
-
Step 8
Place the orchid in a sunny window that is free from drafts. Orchids need as much light as possible for proper growth and flowering. For extra humidity, place the plant on a tray of pebbles and water. This also allows excess water from the pot to drain.
-
Step 9
Fertilize the orchid with liquid plant food. Follow the manufacturers recommendation when applying to avoid burning the roots.
