Purify your space before performing any rituals. One of the most popular cleansing practices is the use of smudge sticks. A smudge stick is a densely packed bundle of herbs which usually includes sage. The stick smolders when lit producing fragrant smoke. Smudging has its roots in shamanic practices it is quite simple and effective. Unfortunately, smudge sticks can also be expensive when bought at specialty stores, but if you follow these quick and easy steps to make your own smudge stick you can save money and since they are your creation, they will have even more potency.

Things You'll Need

  • Dried sage stalks
  • Dried lavender stalks
  • Dried thyme stalks
  • Natural twine

Instructions

    • 1

      Gather all the dried herb stalks together and arrange then in an intertwined bundle.

      Tie the stalks together at the end and then wind both ends of the twine upwards around the bundle until its bound together.

      Light one end of the smudge stick.

    • 4

      Extinguish the flame and allow the smoke to fill the area.

    • 5

      Fan the smoke and visualize the cleansing qualities of the herbs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use a smudge stick around smoke detectors.

  • If you have any respiratory illnesses be wary of using the smudge stick.
