One of the easiest accessories to add to a woman's outfit is a scarf. This fashion choice is present in many different cultures, and historians have dated its usage back to 1000 B.C. In the mid twentieth century, scarf wearing was seen to be a true mark of elegance for actresses such as Grace Kelly and Lana Turner. Still, the wearing of scarves remains timeless. While scarves come in a variety of materials ranging from cotton to wool, adding silk scarves to the outfit is an easy way to give an additional bit of elegance to an otherwise drab styling choice. In tying your silk scarf, you'll want to make sure that the scarf is secure because nothing detracts from the elegant look like someone constantly retying their knot.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pick the style and color of your choice. Scarves come in many different lengths, from the short bandannas to scarves that measure 4 feet in length. In addition, scarves vary in shape from rectangle to triangles. The size and shape of your scarf will depend entirely on the outfit it is to be worn with.

  2. Step 2

Hold the scarf in the middle until the ends hang at the same length.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the scarf around your neck so that the ends are on one side, and the middle is on the other. This should create a loose loop on the side opposite of the ends.

  4. Step 4

Simply slip the ends through the loose loop. Be careful not to pull too tight. If you do, you could wrinkle the scarf or worse yet, have difficulty breathing.

  5. Step 5

After tying the scarf, additional security measures, such as broaches or pins, can be added to make sure the scarf stays in place. This is particularly helpful on particularly windy days or days in which the scarf wearer has to be outside all day. The broach or pin should be attached over the knot and should not be too large or gaudy, nor so small that the scarf seems too large for the adornment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Silk scarves come in a variety of colors and patterns. Don't be afraid to experiment. Simple monotone silk scarves can be beautiful and add to an otherwise plain outfit, but a brightly patterned one can add even more.
  • Scarves can be worn with all types of outfits. Try combining a silk scarf with a shirt and slacks, or shirt and jeans to dress up an otherwise casual attire
