If you are beginning to put rugs on a frame loom, there are different ways for you to combine the yarns and weave it into a pattern. Understanding what your options are will allow you to have a variety of available patterns with rugs that will show contrasts and diversity in style.

From Quick Guide: Fabric Weaving
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Frame Loom
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

Know your warp and weft. The warp is the yarn on the frame loom that is moving up and down. The weft is what you will weave into the frame loom by going across. Each of these will have different colors that you are able to place on the loom.

  2. Step 2

Set your colors. One of the easiest ways to begin setting a pattern for a frame loom is to divide your colors. If you want to have a certain color going up and down, make sure that you put it in your warp. If you want a different color, or the same color, going across, make sure that you put it in your weft.

  3. Step 3

Know when to go over and under. The way that a pattern is made is by taking the weft yarn, Go over and under the warp yarn. Whatever is under will show the warp color. Whatever is over will show the weft color.

  4. Step 4

Set your pattern. A plain pattern will simply go over and under with each piece of yarn. This is a one over, one under pattern.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look at alternatives to make patterns. With frame looms, you can set simple designs that will allow you to enjoy variation with your weaving.
  • Don't skip the wrong pieces of yarn. This will set off the pattern and will cause the wrong colors to show. The only way to fix this is to take your pattern out.
