Whether renting a tuxedo for a special occasion or buying one for regular use, it is important to know how to wear the tux properly. This involves selecting the right tuxedo, getting the right fit and choosing the right accessories. A few simple tips will help accomplish these goals with ease.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a design and color that is considered classic. A traditional black tuxedo with simple lapels will work in just about any situation. The lapels can be either a notch or peak design and still be considered traditional. Also, make sure the jacket is equipped with one or two buttons only.

  2. Step 2

Pay attention to the fit. The jacket should accentuate the natural width of the shoulders, but not appear to be padded. In like manner, the jacket should be roomy enough to allow easy movement of the arms while not gapping in the front when buttoned. The arms of the jacket should be long enough to break at the wrist and allow a hint of the shirt cuff to show, but no more. Inseam length on the pants should allow for the material to break over the instep without puddling on the top of the shoe or below the ankle.

  3. Step 3

Accessories can be used to enhance the basic look of the tux. Simple cummerbunds and bow ties are often the ideal accent for a black tuxedo. Avoid wild colors and go with something simple, such as matching black or simple red.

  4. Step 4

The choice of shirt will often determine the type of neckwear that should be worn with the tuxedo. A safe approach is a simple white tuxedo shirt with wing collar coupled with a simple bow tie. Wing collars will also work well with cravats and Windsor ties. Lay down shirts are tuxedo shirts that sport a collar similar to a standard dress shirt and also work well with a bow tie.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep it simple. Unless you plan on attending a 70s revival, stay away from tuxedos with a flared design to the legs and arms, any type of pastel color scheme or ultra-wide lapels.
  • Have the tux and shirt dry cleaned after each occasion. Generally, men will wear a tuxedo for several hours at a formal event. Body oils can seep into the material and eventually cause damage unless the garment is cleaned regularly.
  • While the temptation is to purchase a currently trendy tuxedo design, keep in mind that fads come and go. You will get more mileage from a traditional design.
