Dumbbell shrugs are a basic exercise that are easy to do, and help build up your back, neck and shoulders. Dumbbell shrugs, when part of a comprehensive workout program, can help give you the upper body you desire.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dumbells
  • Mirror (optional)

    How to Do Dumbbell Shrugs

  1. Step 1

    Grip a dumbbell in each hand, holding them down at your side.

  2. Step 2

    Holding the dumbbells, lift your shoulders as high as possible.

  3. Step 3

    Lower your shoulders, without rolling them forward or backward.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times as you are able, or as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dumbbell shrugs can be performed either standing completely upright, or very slightly bent forward.
  • Watching yourself performing dumbbell shrugs in front of a mirror can help to ensure you are doing the exercise with proper form.
  • As with any weight lifting activity, make sure you are physically fit enough to perform the action. Those with bad backs should avoid doing dumbbell shrugs.
