As any cat owner knows, changing the litter box can be time-consuming. Depending on the type of cat litter you purchase, it can also become expensive. The downside to opting for less expensive brands is that these brands may not be very absorbent, aren't very efficient at odor control and need to be changed more often, which is more expensive in the long run. There are a few simple ways to make your cat litter dollars stretch a little farther while still keeping the box fresh.

How to Make Cat Litter Last Longer

Step1
One option for making cat litter last longer is to buy both the inexpensive litter in a large 15 to 20 lb. bag and buy the more expensive clumping litter to mix together. This can be a good alternative for people on a tight budget. The more expensive clumping litter has better staying power, but because it is of such a fine texture it can require more to fill a litter box. The less expensive clay type of litter makes a good filler while the clumping helps by masking odor and making it easier to remove waste.
Step2
Sprinkle a layer of baking soda on the bottom of the litter box before filling with litter. Baking soda helps to absorb moisture and odor.
Step3
Remove feces and clumped urine from the litter box as often as needed. Cats are very picky creatures and may go outside the litter box if it is not kept clean enough. Clean more often if the litter box is being used by more than one cat.
Step4
At least once a week, totally empty the litter box, wash well with soap and water, dry thoroughly and refill with fresh litter. Adding new litter to a soiled litter box only wastes litter in the long run.
Step5
Provide more than one litter box if you have more than one cat. Some cats won't eliminate in the same litter box where another cat has gone. If there is more than one litter box, they won't become overly full and need a complete change as often.
