Have Good Posture in Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a very advanced type of yoga that is sometimes referred to as "power yoga." It is much more difficult than other types of yoga and is recommended for athletes and those who are physically fit. Ashtanga yoga is very good for building strength and flexibility, but it is important that you are doing the poses correctly and doing them with a good posture.

From Quick Guide: Ashtanga Yoga Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, warm up before practicing Ashtanga yoga. You can do this with some light cardio for about 10 minutes. Doing this will ultimately help with getting your body all lined up the right way, and can be an asset to establishing posture properly.

  2. Step 2

Find your balance. For good posture, good balance is also recommended. Find a fixed object in the room that you can focus on when you are in poses.

  3. Step 3

Pay attention to the instructor or DVD. Watch how others are doing their poses if you are unsure of how your posture should be. No matter what, your posture should not be sloppy or limp when practicing any type of yoga.

  4. Step 4

To maintain good posture, string the poses together by using the plank pose.

  5. Step 5

Imagine that your spine is a yard stick. You want to keep your spine straight at all times for the best benefits and to prevent injury.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep focused on your posture and body for the first few times that you attempt to do this kind of yoga.
  • Don't attempt to do Ashtanga yoga for the first time without a qualified instructor.
