Aquariums are beautiful and peaceful to look at

Keeping an aquarium can be an expensive hobby, so many aquarium owners are on the lookout for good deals on equipment and supplies. Fortunately, aquariums are also a popular hobby, which means you can find lots of great deals if you know where to look.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your local newspaper. Unfortunately, when people move they can't always take their aquariums and supplies with them or perhaps they have decided to take up a different hobby. You can find lots of great deals in your local classified ads.

  2. Step 2

Visit the clearance tables at the local pet stores. Pet store giants like Petco and PetSmart in the U.S. always have big tables of clearance items. You can find heavily discounted supplies like gravel, decorations, fish food and more.

  3. Step 3

Search online classifieds and auction sites. Clearinghouses and other bulk suppliers often use auction sites and online classifieds to get rid of large quantities of products that they've bought in bulk. Check places like eBay and Craigslist to find great discounts on all kinds of aquarium equipment and supplies.

  4. Step 4

Shop online. There are many pet supply websites online that offer discounted products. The clearance section of online stores is often loaded with lots of products at even cheaper prices that you can find in person.

  5. Step 5

Buy wholesale. If you are purchasing a large amount of products or buy/sell fish or other related items, you might want to get a small business license so you can buy wholesale. Most wholesale distributors require a business tax ID. Check with your local small business association for information on how to get one.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some items like food and medicine can't be sold after a certain date. Ask your local pet store owner to save these products for you instead of throwing them away.
