In golft, when you are a good distance away from the green, it's too far for an approach iron and it's not quite a 3 iron. Get out the old 4 club and make it happen. Here's how to use your 4-iron to perfection.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing you need to know is when to use your 4-iron. Generally speaking, a 4-iron ranges from about 150 yards to 180 yards. The exact distance the 4-iron will take you totally depends on the player and will vary from golfer to golfer.

  2. Step 2

Now that you know when to use it, you need to know how your shot should look. The 4-iron is what is referred to as a long iron, meaning it should be hit a certain way. The ball should be lined up directly in between your feet and at a comfortable distance out in front of your body. The ball's trajectory should be low and like a line drive, shooting straight out toward your target. When the ball lands, it will generally roll a bit and it is more difficult to add backspin than with other clubs.

  3. Step 3

Know the club's different uses. A 4-iron is a good club in almost any setting. Obviously it works well from the fairway but it can also be used to help you get out of the rough, since it can provide a little lift to your shot to get it above the deep stuff. It can also be used on the appropriate par 3, again, about 170 yards or so. Tee the ball up just slightly above the grass line so the club can strike the ball cleanly on the sweet spot. It's all smooth sailing from there.

Tips & Warnings
  • The 4-iron is a good club that combines power and distance with some lift that provides for a straight, honest trajectory.
