1
Bone up on pirate lingo. Make up a list of words and expressions. Include some well-known and make some up that sound right. Give it to the children beforehand, and tell them that talking in pirate speak is one of the requirements of attending the bash.

2
Decide on your outfits. The more flamboyant the ensemble, the better. The hostess might choose to wear a pirate’s hook hand for gruesome effect. The attendees can carry toy swords. Rummage through your closet. You might be surprised what you find that can easily be transformed into a costume. Bandannas, hoop earrings, vests, and black pants are just some of the items that you can combine to form a pirate's attire.

Determine what your menu is going to be. Seafood fare is logical for a pirate party, but make it kid friendly. And of course you’ll need "rum," which can be root beer or the beverage of choice. One legend claims that Admiral Nelson, a pirate, died at sea. To preserve him until the ship could reach land, they put his body in a vat of rum. When the ship arrived at shore, all of the rum was gone. The pirates had drunk it despite the fact that there was a body marinating in the brew. A brand of rum was named in honor of the Admiral. Of course, you don't have to be THAT realistic!

Design a treasure hunt. X marks the spot. Dip some paper in tea-soaked water so the paper will take on the appearance of old parchment. Let the paper dry thoroughly, and then write or draw clues on how to find the ‘booty’. If possible make a map for each child. Purchase or make a treasure chest and fill it with coins, jewels and beads. Decorate the chest with beads and baubles so it looks fancy. Hide the treasure chest in your house or in your yard.
