How to Hook Up a Starter Solenoid's Electronics
Starter solenoids are usually replaced along with the starter. It is not cost effective to rebuild a starter. Replacing the entire assembly is recommended. After the starter is removed use the following procedures to safely install your starter/solenoid.
Instructions
-
Replacement of vehicle starter/solenoid
-
1
Disconnect positive and negative leads from battery.
-
2
Remove starter mount bolts and gentle remove starter from mount. Observe how many shims are between the starter and the engine block and replace the same amount.
-
-
3
Disconnect positive and negative leads from starter solenoid. Most starter solenoids are marked black for ground and red for voltage. Do not install the wires to the wrong terminal as this could short out the solenoid.
-
4
Mount new starter in proper position with the proper thickness of shims. Connect positive and negative wire leads to the starter solenoid. Black for ground and red for voltage.
-
5
Reinstall battery positive and negative leads. Test correct starter mounting by cranking the engine over. Starter solenoid should chatter and starter gear should rotate the vehicle flywheel. If starter makes a grinding noise, stop immediately and check starter mounting position. Starter gear and engine flywheel must mesh properly or starter could be damaged

Tips & Warnings
Starters that have been in position for a long period of time may require a dead blow hammer to free the starter from its mount
Do not contact both battery terminals with tools or hands as this will cause a short in the battery and potentially injure the technician.
