Step 1
Pilling a dogPilling the dog. First, you need to know how your dog behaves. It is likely that at some point during your dog's lifetime, you will have to give him or her a pill. For some dogs, this is not an issue as they will slurp up anything you put in front of them. For others, it will be a little more difficult. If you know your dog is not aggressive, you can try to give him the pill directly. Make the dog sit, hold the upper part of his muzzle with one hand, and place your other hand as far back in his throat, past the tongue with the pill as you can. After you place the pill down the throat, rub the outside of his neck/throat, and praise him.

Step 2
Placing the pill in food. If your dog refuses to let you pill him, you can try putting the pill in some food. It is better to put it in something, such as a small cube of cheese, and then put the cheese in with the food. This will prevent the pill from crumbling and the dog from accidentally tasting the pill, and usually the addition of cheese to the food makes the dog eat even quicker!

Step 3
Hollow snacks made for medsGiving the pill with a snack/treat. You can also give a pill with a small treat. Some treats are specifically made for this. They are hollow in the center, which allows you to place the pill inside the treat, crimp the end closed and feed the dog the medication. Another way to do this is to put the pill in a glob of peanute butter. Most dogs love peanut butter and will gobble it up when you offer it to them.

Step 4
Avoid letting the dog taste the pill. Most pills are extremely bitter, and if your dog ever gets a good taste of one, it will make it much harder to give medication in the future. Hide the pills well. Some dogs are masters at rooting through food to find them. You can't get outsmarted by your pooch!
