A urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. The infection is usually caused by the build up and multiplication of bacteria that get into the urine. This article will educate you on how to prevent these infections.

  1. Step 1

    Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice has powerful antioxidants that can flush your kidneys and urinary tract. These antioxidants can also fight off the bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections. If you have a history of urinary tract infections, you should drink 2-4 8 fl oz of cranberry juice each day to ensure kidney and urinary tract health.

  2. Step 2

    Urinate fully before intercourse. Intercourse for some people can last hours at a time. Urinating before intercourse will cut down on urinary tract infections considerably. If you let your urine settle in your bladder for long periods of time, this can cause bacteria build up which can later lead to urinary problems. You are encouraged to urinate fully before beginning intercourse and if you have overactive bladder disorder, make sure you take your medication at least 2-3 hours before intercourse so that you don't develop an urge to use the bathroom during intercourse.

  3. Step 3

    Practice good hygiene. Practicing good hygiene can considerably cut down on many infections. Urinary tract infections are one of the infections that can be prevented by practicing good hygiene. If you don't take a bath daily, you set your body to sustain harmful bacteria on various outer portions of your body, particularly near your genitals and anus. You are encouraged to take a bath at least 1-2 times per day using any antibacterial soap you wish to reduce the amount of bacteria that form on your body.
