How to Create Purification Incense

For thousands of years, the burning of incense has been used in spiritual and religious practices. Early man discovered that burning aromatic plants had a pleasant smell, and if people liked it, then surely the gods would enjoy it as well! Because of this, incense has been used for many purposes for thousands of years. One of the most popular customs is to use incense for the purification of a physical space. Whether you are simply trying to make your home smell nice and feel safe, or whether you are setting aside a sacred space for a religious ritual, purification incense is fairly easy to make.

  1. How to Create Purification Incense

    • 1

Gather all your tools and ingredients before you get started. You'll need mixing and measuring spoons, jars with lids, and a mortar and pestle to grind up your ingredients. Make sure you have labels and a pen, so you can mark down what you've created.

An incense recipe is typically presented in "parts". That means equal units of measurements; if you want to make a lot of incense, a "part" can be a cup or half cup. If you're making a smaller batch, use tablespoons or teaspoons as your "parts". Likewise, a half-part is one half of whatever unit of measurement you're working with.

Use the essential oils or resins in the recipe first. Use your mortar and pestle to mash them until they are pasty before you add any woody ingredients such as bark or berries. Dry powdery ingredients, such as herbs or flowers should go in last.

Use the following recipe to make a purification incense:

      1 part Frankincense

      1/2 part Myrrh

      1 part Dragon's Blood resin

      1/2 part Sandalwood

      1/2 part dried Patchouli

      1/2 part Cinnamon

      1 part Sage

    • 4

Store your mixed incense in an airtight jar until you are ready to use it.

    • 5

To burn your incense, light a charcoal disc (available in most metaphysical stores or religious shops) and place the powdery incense on top of it. As the charcoal disc burns, so will your creation, and you can enjoy the sweet smell of your own purification incense.
