-
Step 1
Measure the area you plan on tiling, whether it is a wall or table. Find the center point of this area.
-
Step 2
Place the tiles to be broken on a towel, then place another towel on top. Make sure you are wearing your eye protection. Use a hammer to break the tiles. Lift up the towel to check and see if the tiles are the size that you want them.
-
Step 3
Lay out the broken tiles on your work area to find a pattern you like for it. Precision is not necessary here.
-
Step 4
Using your notched trowel, apply mastic adhesive to your surface. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle.
-
Step 5
TIlesPlace your first tile on the center point and work out from there. At the edges you will want to use whole or half tiles, as opposed to the broken tiles. Use a twisting motion when placing your tiles onto the mastic adhesive.
-
Step 6
While you are working, use a straightedge or level to make sure that your areas are flush with each other. Allow the adhesive to cure overnight.
-
Step 7
Wearing your safety glasses and a pair of gloves, apply grout using a rubber grout float held at a 45-degree angle. Work the grout into all the joints. Cover the entire surface, periodically wiping the excess grout with a damp sponge.
-
Step 8
After the grout dries, clean with a damp sponge, then buff your surface with a soft cloth.
