This article will teach you how to check a screen name for availability on AOL. A screen name is a name unique to you that will be used to identify you when using AOL for email or the AOL Instant Messenger service.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • AOL software
  1. Step 1

    Log into your AOL account.

  2. Step 2

Click "settings" in the AOL toolbar.

  3. Step 3

Choose "screen names" from the list.

  4. Step 4

    Click "Create a screen name."

  5. Step 5

Enter your desired screen name and click continue. The AOL software will tell you whether or not the screen name you chose is already in use. Unfortunately, AOL has millions of users, so it is unlikely that you will be able to get an obvious or simple name like "bob" or "superman." The more creative your name, the better your chances of it being available. Adding numbers is a common way of getting a name close to what you want. For example, while "mrcool" may not be available, "mrcool18302" very well may be. People often put their birth year after a name to make it unique. AOL will also suggest available names that are similar to your desired name. Keep trying until you find something that suits you. That's all there is to it!
