Over the years my family has become addicted to rock climbing. Not a summer goes without rock climbing, whether it's while we're camping or just going out for the day for a good climb. One of the most important factors of rock climbing is knowing how to safely belay the climber. Here are the basics on how to belay while rock climbing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rock climbing rope
  • Climbing harness
  • Rock climbing shoes
  • Carabiners
  • Belaying device
  1. Step 1

Make sure your top anchor is very securely fastened to either a premade stake, or whatever else you are using as an anchor. The first step when top roping--and probably the most important thing to remember while getting ready to belay a climber--is safety. Never climb unless you know you can trust what you're anchored to.

  2. Step 2

Ensure that your climbing rope is securely through your belaying device, as well as securely fastened to the climber's carabiner.

  3. Step 3

Consider the weight of the climber and the weight of the belayer. If the weight of the belayer is less that the weight of the climber, the belayer should tie off to either a tree or something else with enough weight to make up the difference between the two of them. If you neglect to do this when you start letting the climber down, you will skyrocket up the face of the rocks.

  4. Step 4

Start the climb. As the climber climbs, the belayer pulls the rope through the belaying device, keeping just enough slack for the climber to be able to move up the face of the rock. You must be careful not to let the climber have too much slack or he will have a pretty good fall if he happens to slip.

  5. Step 5

Bring the climber down. After the climber has reached the top, or if she has climbed as far as she is comfortable, the belayer slowly brings her down by using the belaying devices. The belaying device releases the rope a little bit at a time until the climber is safely back on the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go to your local climbing wall for a quick lesson on how to belay before taking your first trip. Having a chance to learn in a safe environment will ensure that you will be able to safely belay while out on the rock face.
  • Make sure that all your equipment and harnesses are in good condition before climbing. Using faulty equipment can result in serious injury or even death.
  • Never anchor to anything that is wobbly or looks unsecured.
