How to Hold a Bo Staff

When learning the Japanese martial art Bojutsu, you should know how to hold a Bo staff in a neutral position to prepare yourself for a variety of attacking and blocking positions.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bo staff
  1. Step 1

    Identify your dominant hand. This is the hand with which you usually write.

  2. Step 2

    Hold the Bo staff horozontally, find its center and place that, chest high, in the middle of your torso.

  3. Step 3

    Place your hands about shoulder width apart.

  4. Step 4

    Grasp the Bo with your dominate hand palm up, and your other hand palm down. Wrap your fingers around the staff firmly and curl your thumb around to close your hand around the Bo staff.

Tips & Warnings
  • From this stance you will be able to move into many positions.
  • Do martial arts under a trained teacher, and do not spar without proper gear.
