Taking a public speaking class can be difficult, but choosing the right topic can make it a lot easier. Try the following steps to help you chose an appropriate speech topic for you and your situation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a topic that is meaningful to you. If you speak about something that has an importance to you, it will help you be at ease.

  2. Step 2

Determine how important the topic will be to your audience. Try to get the audience interested by choosing a topic that is important to them.

  3. Step 3

Find a topic that is both familiar and interesting, as it will provide some background knowledge for everyone. Try not to pick something that most people already know a lot about.

  4. Step 4

Think about how the listeners will receive your topic. Plan how you will present the topic. Any props and visual aids that are going to be used should be planned and integrated into your speech naturally. Also, keep your tone of voice in mind.

  5. Step 5

Try to choose a topic that is current and up to date. Outdated information will not be perceived well.

  6. Step 6

Unless specified, try not to choose a controversial topic. If you're nervous already, it is a good idea to be informative and not judgmental.

  7. Step 7

Keep to the specified criteria that your professor has given in order to get the grade you want. You can find several acceptable topics within the given criteria.
