A tie can make or break a man’s outfit. With just a few short easy steps, a tie can be chosen and a look completed whether the tie is being purchased or selected from a closet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When choosing a tie, the first step is to think about the occasion at which this tie will be worn. Decide whether it will be used for casual, everyday, business or formal use. For casual or everyday use, you may consider ties that are more durable for longevity. If it’s for business, such as a meeting, an interview, speech, formal business event, prepare to dress to impress.

  2. Step 2

Think about the material and type of tie. Decide what kind of material best suits you, the outfit and occasion. Some men prefer silk ties; other prefer micro-fiber. Also decide whether it will be a traditional tie or clip-on.

  3. Step 3

Once you’ve selected the material and type of ties, it’s time to color coordinate your collared shirt and tie. First, try the solid color ties with a white collared shirt. Next, view pattern ties with the white collared shirt. After the white collared shirts, move to solid-colored collared shirts. Mix and match light-colored ties with dark-colored shirts and vice versa.

  4. Step 4

This step is for those who plan to wear a coat. If a coat will not be used, skip to Step 5. When wearing a coat, the tie that is chosen should also match the color and pattern of the coat and inside shirt. Try different color combinations and patterns as you did in Step 3.

  5. Step 5

The last detail in choosing a tie is matching the tie with accessories that may be worn. From cufflinks and pocket squares to belts and jewelry, the tie should match every piece of the outfit.
