The most traditional way of preparing fresh lobster is the steaming method. This leaves the lobster meat moist and easy to pick out of the shell. Lobster can also be stuffed and baked, broiled, boiled, grilled or even microwaved.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 or 2 live lobsters
  • Large lobster or stock pot
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Tongs
  • Lemon or melted butter (for serving)
  • Lobster cracker and fork
  1. Step 1

Fill the lobster pot 2/3 of the way with water and set on a burner. Add a tablespoon of salt to the water.

  2. Step 2

Once the water is boiling, drop the lobsters in one at at time, head first. Begin the cooking time from when the pot comes back to a boil.

  3. Step 3

Cook lobsters for 12 to 15 minutes. As a rule of thumb, you want to boil for 10 minutes for the first pound and 3 minutes per additional pound. The lobsters will turn bright red while cooking.

  4. Step 4

Using the tongs, take the lobsters out of the water. Drain off excess liquid.

  5. Step 5

Plate and serve with the lemon and melted butter. Can be served hot or cold.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lobsters should be cooked the day they are bought but can be stored in the refrigerator until cooking time.
  • You can cook up to 2 lobsters at the same time if the pot is large enough.
  • Make a cut across the center of the lobster's front claws with a large knife to make cracking them open easier.
  • Leave the rubber bands on the claws until after the lobster is cooked.
