How to Dismount with Pedal Clipped Shoes On

  1. Step 1

While the bike is coasting, bring one foot to the upper position of the pedal stroke. Undo the straps on the shoe, and ease the foot out, then rest it on the shoe. Take a few pedal strokes to maintain speed.

  2. Step 2

Repeat the process with the other foot. Continue pedaling until it's time to dismount at the transition area.

  3. Step 3

When it's time to dismount, bring the pedals to the mid-stroke position, about parallel with the ground. Take your foot off of the shoe, stop the bike, and dismount to your preferred side. Run your bike into the transition area.

  4. Step 4

Dismounting with clipless pedals is a skill that requires practice to perform consistently. Make a habit of doing it so it's simple and fast.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice before trying this at a race.
  • When you dismount, be sure the pedal is high enough that the shoe doesn't drag the ground.
  • Give yourself enough time to perform the task before reaching the dismount line.
