Things You'll Need:

  • Windows-based computer

    Cleaning Your Windows Desktop

  1. Step 1

Begin by clicking on My Computer.

  2. Step 2

On the top toolbar, you'll see a folder icon with an arrow pointing up. Click on it to open an Explorer window that shows your desktop files.

  3. Step 3

Begin cleaning your Windows desktop by deleting files you no longer need. You will be prompted to verify that you want these files sent to your recycle bin. Files can be retrieved from the recycle bin at a later date if you discover you need them again. Only when the recycle bin is emptied are the files truly gone, though a sophisticated hacker can still sometimes extract them. Your recycle bin is a safety net.

  4. Step 4

Be sure to delete the icons to programs you don't intend to use. Sometimes when you install a program you want, it automatically places icons on your desktop that you might not want. Links to the company's help desk and other program downloads are examples of this. Shortcuts can always be deleted without affecting the program.

  5. Step 5

Adding additional folders to your desktop will make it easier to keep these files in order and make your Windows desktop look less cluttered.

  6. Step 6

As you create additional folders, you might want to label them to reflect their content. You might want to create folders for work, for family files and for other things.

  7. Step 7

Periodically, you will want to sort through the items that accumulate on your Windows desktop in order to keep your desktop clean.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can create sub-folders in the My Documents file too.
  • Deleting an icon from the desktop will not remove the program from your computer.
