How to Remove Cat Urine from Mattresses

  1. Step 1

The best thing to do is to try and keep the cat from urinating on your mattress. There are different ways to save your mattress and keep the cat off of it. Shutting your door is one of them. A plastic fitted sheet that is normally used for toddlers will help to save your mattress.

  2. Step 2

If the urine stain from the cat has dried and you are having trouble finding the specific spot, a black light will come in very handy. If the area is still wet, make sure to blot it with paper towels or a wash rag. Only blot; rubbing the soiled area will help the stain to set in.

  3. Step 3

There are different urine-removal products available for purchase at different pet stores and hardware stores. These products usually come in two different kinds: liquid and powder. Both can be used on your mattress; you will just have to pick the one that works best for you.

  4. Step 4

A cheaper alternative to removing cat urine from your mattress is baking soda. You will need to apply this to the wet area on the mattress. The baking soda will turn yellow; it is doing this because it is pulling the urine out of the mattress. Remove the yellow baking soda and keep doing this process over until the baking soda stays white.

  5. Step 5

Another great way to remove cat urine from your mattress is by using distilled white vinegar. Combine one part vinegar with two parts warm water and create a spray. Lightly spray over the areas where the cat soiled the mattress and rub with a paper towel. Once this solution dries, clean with warm water.

  6. Step 6

One very important thing to ask--is the litter box clean? Just cleaning your litter box daily or every other day could cut down or eliminate your smelly problem.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow directions on any products you buy; this way you will not ruin your mattress.
