How to Pick a Women's Business Suit

  1. Step 1

Determine your body shape first when looking for a quality women's business suit. Most people fit into one of the following categories: regular (misses), women's, petite, or tall. If you're a combination of two of those, you can probably find things to modify or make work in both sections.Once you determine your body shape, then you can make your selections based on what's available in the store.

  2. Step 2

Choose colors that are neutral as these will give you the opportunity to combine pieces of your wardrobe to increase the number of outfits you have. Classic women's suit colors are black, navy and gray. Brown suits are also considered neutral.

  3. Step 3

Always try on a suit before purchasing it. Make sure the sleeves rest about 5 inches from your wrist. Sleeves that are too long can be altered by a tailor, but sleeves that are too short look unprofessional. Jacket length and fit is also important. Women's suit jackets should never appear too large or too small.

  4. Step 4

Wear high heel shoes or bring a pair that you wear on a regular basis with you so you can determine the correct hem line or pant length.

  5. Step 5

Choose fabrics such as linen or cotton blends as these tend to be wrinkle resistant. Avoid suits made from 100% polyester. To test the material, gather a portion of the suit jacket in your hand and squeeze. Release to see if the suit becomes wrinkled. If not, you should be able to travel with the suit and wear it comfortably throughout the day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spending more for a quality suit will allow you to get more use out of it.
  • Even though ordering clothing online can save you time and money, trying on a suit before purchasing it is the best way to get the most for your money. Not only will you be able to tell how well the suit fits, you will also be able to tell if the fabric is the right choice for your lifestyle.
