How to Pick a Program at the University of London

Studying through the University of London can be one of the most exciting endeavors of your life. It can also be a challenge because the U.K. system is not like the U.S. educational system. One of the strong suits is the affordability of top level schools. First, you should know that the University of London is not one school, but nineteen. They are all accredited. Second, the price depends on the school and program.

      Go to University of London Website (see Resources). Click "Find a Course: Pick the appropriate level of study." Programs in the United States would be called a major.

      You can choose a certificate/diploma, which is just a couple of courses, It is designed for people who want to do graduate work, but did not have a degree in the area they want to pursue. It also helps people get their feet wet with the system. Bachelor programs are three years. They do not have the general education requirements as U.S. colleges do. All the programs will be in your area of study.

      Compare programs if offered at multiple schools. Most of the programs have a prospectus for you to look at. The tuition is usually on the first page. It will be in pounds, so just roughly double it for the approximate dollar rate.

      Download an application and fill it out. You can generally send a copy of your diploma or degree if you are trying to prove education, but follow the directions.

      Send in the application, fee and supporting documents, then wait. It will generally take a couple of weeks for them to respond. It might be good to send it by FedEx to shorten the time.

  • Classes start in September, but you have until November. The exams are in May.

  • Know where the British Embassy is located for testing.

  • Most of your credit is earned by the exam you take in May. If you fail it, you may be able to retake it, but you cannot move on.

  • Tuition or registration fees are for the year.

  • All courses are one year.

  • Don't forget to check currency rates before you write your check.

  • If doing law, check with your state to see if you can take the bar. California is best, but you have to take a special exam after your first year. Law programs generally requires a tutor or additional program at another school.
