There are many reasons why our teeth become dull or discolored. It could be the use of tobacco, avid consumption of coffee, sodas, wine and other foods and beverages that stain teeth. Frequent use of certain antibiotics can also cause tooth discoloration. All of this can add up to yellow and gray teeth. The following steps will give you some tips on how to lighten up those stains and maintain a bright white smile.

Things You'll Need:

    Initial Whitening Process

  1. Step 1

Choose a tooth whitening process. There are a few types of effective whitening methods available:A. Laser whitening at a dentist office takes about an hour and can whiten teeth several shades immediately. This method of whitening can be pricey, but great if you have a weekend date, upcoming job interview or you just want to don a gleaning movie star smile and you can’t wait another minute to do it.B. Gel whitening takes about 3 weeks give or take a week depending on how stained your teeth are. Your dentist will make a mold from your teeth and provide the gel bleach for the trays. You simply add a few drops of gel to the bleaching trays and leave on your teeth for up to 2 hours per day until your teeth reach the shade of white you want.C.Over the counter whiteners work well, but seem to take longer and do not fit teeth as well.

  2. Step 2

Maintain your pearly whites after whitening them. This prevents having to go through an expensive or time-consuming procedure again. The whitening gel you get from your dentist usually provides enough bleach for several months of maintenance. Simply use once a week for 1 to 2 hours.

  3. Step 3

Keep them white by brushing your teeth with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Do not gargle with it or swallow it. Simple mix about an 8th of a teaspoon with enough hydrogen peroxide to form a paste and brush teeth making sure to rinse thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Brush your teeth three times a day. This will not only keep stains from building up, but will prevent plaque buildup as well which also causes staining and cavities.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you drink coffee, tea, soda, wine, beer or cocoa try to use a straw when possible as drinking through a straw will keep sticky beverages off the front of your teeth.
  • If you are going to use dental bleach to whiten your teeth, whether it is from your dentist or over the counter, beware if you have sensitive gums as even the milder grades can burn. If your gums start to burn it could be that you have too much gel in the trays. Make sure to add only a droplet to each tooth insert of the bleaching trays. It is also possible that you are leaving the trays on too long. If you have severe pain when you bleach your teeth even after you reduce the amount of gel and time it remains on your teeth, stop bleaching and tell your dentist.
