Step 1
Create a well thought up weekly menu of family favorites. When creating menu, find recipes that have multiple uses for ingredients. If you have a recipe for a main dish that calls for tortillas, be sure to buy shredded cheese to make quesadillas with the remaining tortillas. By creating a menu and a shopping list, you will not forget to buy important ingredients as well as refrain from imulse buying.
-
Step 2
When making a recipe that serves more than your family will eat, divide leftovers into portions and freeze for quick meals for another day. A healthy alternative to t.v. dinners.
-
Step 3
Instead of frying food such as chicken or french fries, bake them in the oven on a high temperature such as 425 of 450 degrees. By breading the chicken with crushed corn flakes or crushed, seasoned croutons you will create a crispy skin similar to frying.
-
Step 4
Buy lean ground beef or ground turkey and grill burgers at home. An even better choice is a veggie burger. The same "flame-kissed" flavor can be created at home on your patio grill minus the high sodium, cholesterol and fat content given to you by your local fast food joint. Provide a variety of toppings for your family to choose from such as: onions, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and sliced cheese. While grilling the burgers, coarsely chop your favorite veggies and throw them on the grill as well.
-
Step 5
Pick healthy accompaniments to your meal. Chips can actually be a healthy snack choice too, if you select the right bag of chips. Sun Chips are all natural, they contain no artificial flavoring or preservatives. Fritos corn chips are all natural as well as most "corn" chips. You can also buy veggie chips or sweet potato chips for healthy alternatives. Pre-portion your chips into snack size storage bags to ensure that you do not over-indulge on your favorite snack.
