There is really no wrong way to hold a horseshoe, despite what anyone might tell you. You can hold it by one of the shanks, at the bottom, in the middle or wherever it feels best to you. The only thing you need to know about holding a horseshoe is that once you throw it, the idea is to have the shoe land open around the stake.

Different people have different techniques when it comes to pitching during a game of horseshoes. Some throw it straight out while other's like to make their horseshoe flip. In order to throw a shoe properly, you must have your hands positioned correctly. If you're trying to master a horseshoe "turn," you'll have to grab the horseshoes by the shanks. If you're trying to flip a horseshoe, you'll have to hold it by the rounded part of the shoe.

In the game of horseshoes, your stance is very important. You must have a relaxed and natural stance in order to pitch the horseshoe properly. Choose one side of the stake, either the left or the right, which feels right to you, and never pitch on the opposite side. If you're right-handed, you should stand with your left foot back and as you swing your arm forward to release the horseshoe, take a step.

Before pitching your shoe, get a feel of the motion. Hold your horseshoe in front of you, arm outstretched. Swing it so that it is at eye level and line it up with the stake. Begin your back swing slowly, and as your arm begins to swing forward, prepare to let go of the shoe once the shoe reaches eye level again. You do not have to "flick your wrist" as some say. Just relax and let go.

Tips & Warnings
Missed shots are usually due to your stance so if you're constantly missing the stake, try a new stance.
In horseshoes, finger positions are very important. A grip too tight can cause the shoe to flip too many times.
A grip too loose can cause the shoe not to twist at all and not make it to the stake.
Kids should be supervised if outside during a game of horseshoes.
Do not stand near the stake when someone is pitching.
Be careful not to throw the horseshoe to hard or high, as you could injure someone.
