Freelance writing is a great career choice. It's becoming more and more popular. The problem is, it can be hard to get in to. You need to work hard to get that first assignment and from there, it gets easier. Try these steps to getting your first freelance assignment.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Resume - Make sure you have your resume all made out. Put any relevant information about yourself on the resume that will help you get the job. Have both electronic and hard copies ready for distribution.

  2. Step 2

Check Online - This is the best source for a freelancer to find work. Check places that you've heard of, search engines, publications that you enjoy, and job boards for possible freelance work.

  3. Step 3

Create a Website - You don't have to spend a lot of money to create a good website. Have information about yourself, your resume, and some sample pieces. Also consider a blog that contains updated information about what you're doing. This will help potential employers learn some information about you.

  4. Step 4

Rates - As a beginner, the rates aren't that great. You may only get a couple cents a word, but right now you want experience. Once you have some solid experience, employers will feel better about giving you good pay.

  5. Step 5

Query Letters - For every place you apply, send a query letter specific to that employer. Include information about your idea, piece, and benefits of having you on the team.

  6. Step 6

Keep Trying - The first assignment is the hardest to get. You have to take on a lot of rejection in order to find an employer that is willing to give you a chance as a newbie. Look everyday at your sources and apply for all of the freelance opportunities that you find, even if you don't think you'll get it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for opportunities that appeal to you. If you do well, you could get a long-term gig that has decent pay.
