Flat tires are among the most common car related annoyances drivers face. In order to change a tire you must know how to raise your car with a jack first. Every jack is different, but the principles remain the same. Once you learn how to lift your car with a jack you will be one step closer to being able to change your own tire.

Things You'll Need:

How to Raise a Car with a Jack

  1. Step 1

Place the jack in the correct position beside the flat tire. If the flat tire is a rear tire, place the jack in front of it. If the flat tire is a front tire, place the jack behind it.

  2. Step 2

Follow the instructions on how to lift the jack. There are many types of jacks, from electric to floor jacks to hand operated versions. Instructions should be printed on the jack itself. For hand operated jacks, turn the handle clockwise to raise the jack.

  3. Step 3

Lift the car with the jack until the wheel is sufficiently off the ground for you to remove the tire.

  4. Step 4

Lower the jack once you are done with your repair work (when you have put a new tire on). In order to lower hand operated jacks, turn the handle counterclockwise. For all other jacks, follow the instructions.

Tips & Warnings
  • When changing a flat tire make sure to loosen the lug nuts before raising the car with a jack, as it will be much harder once the wheel is off the ground and able to spin.
  • Be very careful when climbing beneath a car that is raised with a car jack, as the car may fall on top of you if improperly raised.
