Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sand
  • Small bowls
  • Food coloring, dye, or natural coloring materials
  • Water

    How to Make Colored Sand

  1. Step 1

Set out a bowl for every color you want.

  2. Step 2

Divide your sand equally into each bowl.

  3. Step 3

Add water to each bowl until the sand is submerged, but no more.

  4. Step 4

Add food coloring or dye to each bowl.

  5. Step 5

Stir the mixture, and allow it to sit for an hour.

  6. Step 6

After an hour, check each of your bowls. If the shade of color is still too light, allow it to sit for another hour.

  7. Step 7

If you are pleased with the color, pour out the water, and spread the sand on a flat surface to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • To use natural dyes, mix equal parts water with colored foodstuffs, such as spinach or blueberries. Boil the mixture for half an hour to an hour and strain. Then use this mixture instead of water and food coloring.
  • Store your sand in airtight containers.
