Hosting an eco-friendly, or "green" dinner party is just as easy (or easier!) than throwing one the "old fashioned" way. Follow these steps and host your own "green" dinner party with ease and flair.

How to Host a "Green" Dinner Party

  1. Step 1

Choose an “earth friendly” theme. Have your guests bring plastic bags that can be recycled, and in return, give them reusable grocery bags as party favors.

  2. Step 2

Send electronic invitations instead of using paper ones! Sites such as Evite.com allow you to manage your invitations online, and even send thank you notes! For casual gatherings, verbal or telephone invitations are great. Or, if you do want to send invitations, choose something natural or reusable, like a seashell or a glass bottle.

  3. Step 3

Select the food and drink for your party with your "green" theme in mind. Organic is the way to go! Serve whole foods that come from local sources, your farmer’s market, or even your own garden! There are some fantastic choices when it comes to organic wines, and exotic lemonades and other healthy and earth friendly beverages. Also, ditch the paper plates! Dig out your grandmother’s china and use it! Or, hit a thrift shop and pick up some inexpensive dishware that you can keep for parties.

  4. Step 4

Use natural decorations and lighting. Flowers from your garden, shells and rocks from the beach, and other natural elements will enhance the “green” décor. Also consider soy-based candles—or plan your party early enough to capture natural light.

  5. Step 5

Cleaning up after your party should be a breeze. Use a natural dish soap to wash the dishes, and hand dry. Recycle any glass bottles or plastic you used. Send your guests home with leftovers so that they, too, can reduce, recycle and reuse!
