Horehound lozenges are for stopping a nagging cough. Whether your cough is from a cold or smoking, these lozenges will coat your throat, ease your coughing and soothe your throat after a harsh coughing attack. Horehound lozenges are easy to make, and they taste sweet because they include sugar and honey.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup horehound leaves
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tbsp. honey or corn syrup
  • Cheesecloth
  1. Step 1

Boil 1 cup of horehound leaves in 1 cup water for about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely.

  2. Step 2

Strain the cooled mixture through a cheesecloth. Keep the liquid and discard the boiled leaves. Place the liquid in a clean pot.

  3. Step 3

Add 2 cups sugar and 2 tbsp. honey or corn syrup. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer. Constantly stir the mixture until the temperature reaches 300 degrees F or until the mixture reaches the hard-crack stage.

  4. Step 4

Butter a cookie sheet. Pour the mixture on the sheet and allow to cool.

  5. Step 5

After the mixture turns rock-hard, like peanut brittle, break it into small pieces. Keep your horehound lozenges in a sealed baggie or dish.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can buy dried horehound leaves in bulk in some health food stores.
  • Do not eat the lozenges like candy. Horehound can cause irregular heartbeats if taken in large quantities.
  • Do not give the lozenges children without consulting a doctor.
  • Do not take the lozenges for longer than two or three weeks without consulting a doctor.
