How to make Horehound Lozenges
Horehound lozenges are for stopping a nagging cough. Whether your cough is from a cold or smoking, these lozenges will coat your throat, ease your coughing and soothe your throat after a harsh coughing attack. Horehound lozenges are easy to make, and they taste sweet because they include sugar and honey.
Things You'll Need
- 1 cup horehound leaves
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 tbsp. honey or corn syrup
- Cheesecloth

Boil 1 cup of horehound leaves in 1 cup water for about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely.

Strain the cooled mixture through a cheesecloth. Keep the liquid and discard the boiled leaves. Place the liquid in a clean pot.

Add 2 cups sugar and 2 tbsp. honey or corn syrup. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer. Constantly stir the mixture until the temperature reaches 300 degrees F or until the mixture reaches the hard-crack stage.

Butter a cookie sheet. Pour the mixture on the sheet and allow to cool.

After the mixture turns rock-hard, like peanut brittle, break it into small pieces. Keep your horehound lozenges in a sealed baggie or dish.

Tips & Warnings
You can buy dried horehound leaves in bulk in some health food stores.
Do not eat the lozenges like candy. Horehound can cause irregular heartbeats if taken in large quantities.
Do not give the lozenges children without consulting a doctor.
Do not take the lozenges for longer than two or three weeks without consulting a doctor.
