    Use Good Basketball Form

  1. Step 1

Rest the Ball in Your Strong Hand: If you are a lefty, use your left hand. If you are a righty, use your right hand. Use the off hand to help stabilize the ball as it rests in your strong hand.

  2. Step 2

Keep Your Elbow Straight:: As you begin your shooting motion, keep the elbow of your shooting arm straight and pointed toward the basketball hoop.

  3. Step 3

Bend at the Knees: Keeping in mind steps 1 and 2 as you bend and begin your controlled jump. Your shoulders should be square and facing the hoop and your feet shoulder-width apart.

  4. Step 4

Shoot at the Top of Your Jump: As you reach the top of your jump, extend your shooting arm, flick your wrist and release the ball.

  5. Step 5

Keep a Good Follow-Through: As you release the ball at the top of your jump, flick your wrist to give the ball back spin which will soften the shot. Make sure you flick your wrist all the way to follow-through even after the ball is on its way to the hoop.

  6. Step 6

Repetition: Proper basketball form will not come with the first attempt. It takes repetition to be able to put all five of the above steps together in one fluid motion during a basketball game.

Tips & Warnings
  • *Always keep your eyes on the hoop.
  • *Practice shooting the ball from off the dribble as well as from a catch.
  • *As you practice your shooting form, move around to different areas of the court and from different distances from the hoop.
  • *Pay attention to the college players and the professionals. It is true that everyone has their own shooting technique, but the excellent shooters incorporate the same principles in their jump shot.
  • *Play as often as possible with others. It is necessary for you to spend time just shooting, but you also need to incorporate your jump shot form into the flow of an actual game.
  • Don't forget to practice your free throws. The form is a little different because you are standing still and not jumping. Also, you will be taking many free-throws during a game.
