1
Find out how your local EMS system uses paramedics. Some regions have paramedics as part of the fire department. Others use paramedics in hospital or third-party ambulance companies. Sometimes smaller EMS systems don't let paramedics apply at all, since they may have found it to be cheaper or easier to use EMT-B's.

2
Decide if you want to apply to run 911 emergency calls, or non-emergency transports. Depending on where you live, for example, the fire department may run 911, while private companies may handle non-emergency calls. Or hospital ambulances may handle emergencies while third-parties may run non-emergencies.

If you want to be a fire department paramedic, find out if your local fire department requires their paramedics to be firefighters as well. Many do, and if that is the case, you will have to go through the regular testing procedures to apply.
-
4
To apply to a private ambulance company or hospital-based ambulance service, write a resume. Make photocopies of your paramedic license, as well as any other certifications you might have (ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, etc).
-
5
Call your local DMV or Secretary of State to get a copy of your driver record. Many ambulance companies require a clean driving record, as well as a photocopy of your driver's license.
-
6
Once you have your resume and photocopies in hand, visit the ambulance service's main office. Most ambulance companies prefer paramedics to apply in person, as opposed to over the phone.
