Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eyeshadow base or primer
  • Flat eyeshadow brush
  • Small fluffy eyeshadow brush
  • Highly-pigmented deep purple eyeshadow
  • Mid-tone silvery purple eyeshadow
  • Lightly-pigmented smoky rosy purple eyeshadow
  • Shimmery light purple eyeshadow
  • Deep purple eye pencil
  • Makeup sponge
  • Everyday foundation
  1. Step 1

Begin with a clean face, free from grime and yesterday's makeup, ready for makeup application. Apply eyeshadow base onto entire eyelid.

  2. Step 2

Dip your flat eyeshadow brush into the highly-pigmented deep purple shadow. It should be a black-gray shade with a purple overtone. Sweep eyeshadow from lash line to barely above the crease. Avoid going past this point and beyond the outer corner of the eye to keep your look clean and to sidestep the appearance of dragged-down eyes. You want yours lifted and fresh.

  3. Step 3
Silvery purple eyeshadow adds another facet to your look.

Wipe away the dark purple shadow from your brush. This time, dip it into the mid-tone silvery purple eyeshadow. Tap excess away and press some onto the center of your eyelid. You want to give this part of your lid some shimmer to create more depth and perspective in your eye makeup, and make it appear as though the two eyeshadows fade into each other. Blend away any of the silver eyeshadow's obvious edges.

  4. Step 4
Smoky rosy purple gives warmth to your eye makeup.

Using a small fluffy eyeshadow brush, stroke on some of the lightly-pigmented smoky rosy purple eyeshadow from the point above the crease where the deep purple shadow ends to just underneath the browbone. You are aiming here to smoke up the faded edges of the dark purple, while simultaneously giving your eye makeup what might appear to be a more natural glow with the hint of rose in the lightly-pigmented shadow.

  5. Step 5
Shimmery light purple for gleaming doe eyes.

On your browbone and in the inner corner of your eye by the bridge of your nose, brush on some of the shimmery light purple eyeshadow. This step is a trick to open up your eyes and give them a polished look.

  6. Step 6

Use the deep purple eye pencil on your lower lash line. This lends an element of balance to your eye makeup by defining your lower eyelid with a color that matches the most solid one on your palette.

  7. Step 7

Clean up any makeup spillage. Use a sponge dipped in some of your everyday foundation to erase any makeup that fell onto your undereye area. Stroke in an outward direction, all the way up past the outer corners of your eyes to take away any unnecessary makeup there as well. You're all done!

Tips & Warnings
  • Basically, there is one quick tip to picking purple eyeshadow: It must have one neutral shade mixed in with it. Neutrals are gray, black and white. This ensures that the color looks good on you no matter the lighting condition, which the use of neutrals does not have to take into consideration. On its own, pure purple looks best under warm, incandescent lighting, like that in a fancy restaurant at night.
  • A highly-pigmented shadow offers more coverage, while a lightly-pigmented shadow allows your skin to show through, as paper does in a watercolor painting.
  • When using the light purple shadow, you may opt for one with a gold shimmer, so that it flatters you even if you have warmer undertones in your skin.
  • Feel free to use other purple eyeshadows based on the techniques here and on your individual preferences.
  • For best results, finish off your eye makeup with black eyeliner on your top lash line and black mascara on your top lashes. You may use dark brown mascara instead if you are fair-skinned and/or light-haired. Mascara on bottom lashes is optional to minimize smudging.
