Have you been on NutriSystem for a while and are ready to transition back to cooking your own meals? If so, you may feel a little overwhelmed at the thought of being responsible for what you cook. That's because the NutriSystem meals are all perfect portion sizes with the right amount of fat, carbs, and calories to help you lose weight. Transitioning from these pre-packaged meals to cooking on your own is a little scary, but you can do it!
Things You'll Need
- NutriSystem serving containers
When you begin transitioning from NutriSystem you will want to go slow. That's because if you change everything at once you may have problems managing portion sizes and cooking on your own. So, change one thing at a time. For example, change NutriSystem snacks for snacks you prepare yourself the first week. After you go a week preparing your own snacks then you can move on to meals. It is always a good idea to try and make snacks that are similar to the NutriSystem snacks you have been eating. That way you are aware of the portion size and are less likely to overeat.
Once you have the snacks under control you can move on to entrees. Make sure when you are preparing your own meals that you follow the NutriSystem nutritional guide for each serving. When you follow this guide you will be able to prepare your own foods that have the same nutritional content as NutriSystem foods. It will take you a little while to get accustomed to cooking and counting calories, carbs, and fat grams, but in time it will become second nature. Then you will know what recipes to use as well as what constitutes a serving size.
A great suggestion to help you transition from NutriSystem to eating your own meals and maintaining your weight is to use the serving containers from previous NutriSystem meals. You will know when you plan on making the transition to cooking your own meals, so for a few weeks before you can save and wash the NutriSystem serving containers to reuse. When you begin cooking for yourself you will have the handy serving containers to use to guide you with serving size. The biggest problem people have when they stop eating NutriSystem foods and transition to cook for themselves is portion size. Using the NutriSystem plates will guide you and teach you how to serve yourself the right amount. You may want to start using salad plates instead of dinner plates, too, to help you eat less overall!
Also, keep some NutriSystem foods on hand for when you don't have time to cook. When you have food that works for your diet on hand it will keep you from straying. You will be less likely to make bad food choices when you have food on hand that is right for your diet!
When eating in restaurants always order grilled meat, nothing fried or in a sauce. Choose steamed vegetables and/or a salad with light dressing on the side. You can't go wrong when you order steamed and grilled foods, just make sure you ask that no oil or butter be added to the food while it is being cooked. You will stay on your diet and enjoy your meal! And, if you must order dessert make sure you share it with two or three others. You'll enjoy the treat with only a portion of the calories!
