Babies who aren't walking yet generally don't need the same type of shoe a toddler would wear. You don't want to restrict their foot movement as this can make it harder for them to develop their walking skills. Here's how to choose soft-soled baby shoes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

For those whose babies are only crawling, finding a soft-soled baby shoe is your best option. They will still protect your baby's feet and help keep them warm in the winter. However, they should still have the accessibility to move their feet around so that they can start cruising and walking. You can research online about the different brands of shoes available for pre-walkers. These shoes won't be worn for very long since you baby will soon start to walk, but you will still want to make sure that they are durable and won't fall apart after a few short weeks.

  2. Step 2

Pre-walker shoes usually come in sizes S, M, L, or XL. Try them on your baby's feet to make sure they don't fall off, yet are big enough that it gives them some room to grow into. Some stores will size your baby's feet to help you determine what size you should be looking for.

  3. Step 3

When your baby starts to cruise, you will want tougher material on the bottom to keep any sharp objects on the ground from hurting the soles of their feet. At the same time, you want them to be able to feel the ground since learning to walk bare feet is best.

  4. Step 4

Children who are only crawling don't need any type of grip on their shoes. If your child is starting to cruise, you may want to find some shoes that have a little grip to keep them from slipping as they move around the furniture.

  5. Step 5

You will find that some shoes easily crack and fall apart. You can ask friends and family who have recently had children to see what their favorite brand of shoes they bought for their children. Once you are happy with a brand, you can buy a couple of different shoes so your baby isn't wearing the same one every day, resulting in the material coming apart before the child outgrows the shoe.
