Instructions

    • 1

Hold the broom upside down, and smack the ice with the handle. You may have to hit the same spot several times to start with before the first sheets of ice break loose.

    • 2

Walk carefully along the side of the driveway, cracking the ice as you go. The ice will break in a spiderweb pattern, showing you how close to need to make the next hit.

    • 3

Scrape up the loose ice on the new path with your shovel. Now you can work from the cleared area back the length of the driveway, breaking up the ice as you go.

    • 4

Scoop your shovel along the cleared area so that it rams under the edge of the ice. This will cause much larger sheets to break away, and make the job go faster. Shovel the broken ice onto the grass as you go until the driveway is clear of ice.

    • 5

Sweep any small bits of ice to the side with your broom, and dust a small amount of deicer along the length of the driveway to prevent refreezing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use extreme caution when walking on or near ice, as it's easy to slip and fall.
