Everyone likes to wear a garment that shows their personal style. A great place to start finding ideas is in magazines. Take some time to look through the entire style magazine section on the local newsstand, or area bookstore. An easy way to incorporate a new and fresh look into your next sewing project is by trimming the pockets. Here are some ideas to help your creativity flow into a fresh new garment that captures your style.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use piping around the welt pocket opening. This could be out of contrasting fabric to draw attention to the detail or use the same fabric as the garment for a subtle look. Whichever way is chosen will give the garment a unique and personal style.

  2. Step 2

Use a zipper on a pocket opening. By using a zipper in place of a welt pocket treatment a blazer or coat will have a casual style. By showing more of the zipper tape gives the garment a biker look.

  3. Step 3

Using contrasting fabric for a patch pocket, this is a bold and unique pocket trimming idea to use. Another way to use contrasting fabric is to just outline the patch pocket. This may feel more comfortable for your personal style.

  4. Step 4

Step out of the ordinary and use fabric paint to trim a pocket. Taking this step opens up so many ideas. Simply let your mind run wild with it. Keep in mind to do test samples before working on the garment. Because some fabric paints can stiffen some fabrics will be difficult to sew during construction of the garment.
