Tennis is a great game, and doubles tennis is twice as fun. Doubles is won by controlling the net and the best players know exactly how to do it. This article will show you exactly how to return serve from the net in doubles tennis and control the match.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tennis partner
  • Tennis racket
  1. Step 1

The first thing you need to do is lineup in the right spot. Playing the net is all about being in the right position. The other team is serving and your partner is back at the baseline. You need to be in the right spot. You should be standing on the service line, on your side of the court, a few steps from the middle line. You should be looking at your opponent who is also at the net. Now you're in position.

  2. Step 2

The next thing you need to do is move when it's your turn. When the ball is served you hold your position. If you're partner returns the ball back to the baseline at the person who served the ball, you should follow the ball and move all the way up to the net and into an aggressive position to hit a winning volley if the ball comes to you. If your partner happens to return the ball to the player at the net (and you should still be watching them), you just need to take a quick step backwards and try to react to their shot, which is probably coming right at your feet.

  3. Step 3

Once you have moved up toward the net, never relinquish your position. You want to be all the way at the net in doubles, so once you get there, stay there.

  4. Step 4

Since you are in position, if the ball should happen to come to you, you should step into your volley and pound it at the feet of the opponent who is closest to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is important to remember that you want to be at the net. So try to sneak up as close as you can (actually, the closest you should get is about a racket's distance away) and stay there.
  • As the ball is served, do not take your eyes off of your opponent at the net. If the ball is returned back to them, they should be hitting the ball right at you. So if you are looking at them it will give you the best to return what will be a very difficult shot.
  • You've got to be quick when you're at the net. If the ball is going to be hit at you, it will most likely be a quick volley and you will need to be on your toes in order to return it.
