If you have decided that you'd like a natural childbirth, you may want to consider hiring a doula or birthing assistant. Doulas are women who help pregnant women through the process of childbirth, providing both physical and moral support. If you will be hiring a doula, you will need to work through a series of interview questions with potential providers before making a final decision.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that doulas work with both the pregnant woman and her partner to achieve the birth that they desire. Your doula should be willing to teach both of you relaxation skills and techniques, as well as demonstrate for your partner the best ways that they can help you as you progress through labor.

  2. Step 2

Be sure to ask if your doula will be able to come to your home when you are in the early stages of labor. Women are sometimes in labor for hours before they are ready to go to the hospital for their birth. If at all possible, you will probably want your doula with you during this time.

  3. Step 3

Ask your doula about her experience, as well as for references from former clients. This will allow you a feel for what type of experience she has. Choose a doula who has experience with a variety of births, complications, and experiences if at all possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to check references if they are provided.
  • You can often find doulas, as well as references and testimonials or complaints, online by utilizing a search engine.
